How Meralco will compute electricity bills during COVID-19 lockdown
Manila, Philippines — The Covid-19 has made everyone face great challenges and far-reaching impacts not only on other’s work and lifestyle but also on labor market outcomes. Since most people are unemployed, one of the unfortunate scenarios that could ever happen is the lack of resources to buy food and pay bills, from credit cards, loans, and of course, the electric bill.
Meralco has suspended the physical meter reading during the Luzon-wide lockdown for the safety of Meralco employees and the public, however, a lot of has been asking about the corresponding charges and billing for the upcoming months.
According to Meralco official website, for households with meters last March 17 to April 14, billing will be estimated based on your average consumption for the past 3 months as prescribed by the Distribution Services and Open Access Rules issued by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). The difference between the estimated 3-month average and the actual meter read (after ECQ is lifted) will be reflected on your next bill and corresponding charges will be adjusted. (See image below)
As for the disconnection, Meralco will be sending out disconnection notices after the 30-calendar day extension of your due date.
As we face uncertainties of the future, there are also other ways on how to deal with the “new normal” to make paying bills a bit easier rather than going to the nearest business centers. By using your Pay Visa or Mastercard-enabled credit card or debit card, you can pay through the following:
- Option 1. Meralco Mobile App (Google) (App Store)
- Option 2. Meralco Business Centers
- Option 3. PayMaya (Go to ‘Pay Bills’ tab and choose a biller ‘Meralco’)
